Hello Tasters!

Hope you celebrated Canada’s 150th big birthday whether something quiet or out with a bang! Hopefully many saw some fireworks and spent time with loved ones!

I really did like this article, acknowledging the controversy of celebrating Canada’s 150th, but also the hope that we can ideally continue to celebrate together our diversity.

For Canada Day with all of the travel, and a few hiccups I’m in major planning mode (and IT sorting so I can catch up) but was able to still celebrate Canada’s amazing food. and amazing people. Since I have spent so much time in Nova Scotia, it always feels like I am coming home. How can it not feel like at home when there is this incredible rhubarb, strawberry apple crips! A day off is always a great excuse to bake!

Delicious homemade rhubarb, strawberry and apple crisp!

Thanks Christine Johnson for hosting me while in Antigonish!

The recipe is from this cookbook
Foods of Spry’s Field –
Cooking and Preserving from then and now

sold by the Urban Farm Museum Society.
(Also this is not an ad – it just happens to be one of Christine’s favourites)

I am soo excited about the interviews that have been completed and those that are being set up!

It is becoming abundantly clear that it will take significant time to post everything that is happening so I will likely acknowledge where I actually am in the post, as well as what I wanted to highlight 🙂

Happy Tasting!

  1. Hi Irena,
So nice to see you enjoying time, friendship and local food in Antigonish! Strawberries are pretty much finished in Vancouver but I bought some BC Ambrosia apples and have abundant rhubarb and raspberries in the garden (not as abundant after giving some to family but love sharing food). I plan to make crisp or muffins with these.

I’m excited to be visiting Halifax in early August and plan to try the famous lobster rolls. One thing I’d like your investigative journalism to tackle is the standard of living for lobstermen.

Enjoy the next leg of your journey! Looking forward to future posts.

    1. Thanks Debbie! It has been so fun so far and I can’t wait to explore more! Sounds beautiful with the rhubarb and raspberries! I am sure the muffins will be amazing! Food somehow always tastes better to me when shared with loved ones 🙂 <3

      Lobster rolls are amazing!!!!

To get you started there is some participatory videos on lobsterfisherman/women from FoodARC http://foodarc.ca/projects/act-for-cfs/our-lobster-our-communities/ .

I am hoping to interview a lobster fisherman/woman as well 🙂

      1. Thanks for sharing these videos on lobstermen/women. I look forward to watching them and to your interview with lobsterman/woman.
