I’ve known about Ocean Wise Seafood Program for at least 9 years now.  It is a program that helps consumers make a sustainable seafood choice.

I am always suppperrr excited to see Oceanwise on a menu but I loved how when I was visiting Victoria, BC last week the restaurant Red Fish Blue Fish really went the extra mile to explain why they are a part of the Ocean Wise program.

So how did it start?
The menu program is part of the ocean wise conservation association and the concept was launched by Vancouver Aquarium in 2005 at the C restaurant with 16 restaurants and now has over 700 partners. How exciting!

What is sustainable seafood?
As per their website their definition of sustainable seafood: “species that have been caught or farmed in a way that ensures the long-term health and stability of that species, as well as the greater marine ecosystem.”

I am still more and more interested in the debate of wild vs. farmed but the more that I look into it from what I can tell HOW fish gathered rather than just where seems to be the most important.

Sustainable seafood and the Oceanwise program is something I still don’t know everything about. It is something I look forward in the future to learning a lot more about. Since I am someone who tends to like to turn every nook and cranny before I say anything about it I can’t say I have done that yet – but what I will say is that anything I have heard or seen I have liked.

So until I know more – I will continue to trust the symbol Oceanwise, get excited about seeing it on the menu and go out of my way to support the initiatives – and choose the food it is labelled beside. It is my small way of doing my best to support it.

Are you familiar with the Oceanwise program?

  1. Hi Irena,
I had not heard of the Ocean Wise program before – thanks for the education. It is fantastic to see businesses initiating/supporting programs like this; it gives us hope for the future. Sustainability is such an important factor in maintaining resources. I will be choosing the Ocean Wise option from now on.
Thank you for your informative post.

    1. My pleasure! So glad that learning about Ocean Wise is useful for your every day eating! 🙂 I agree – sustainability and where our food comes is a really important question to keep asking ourselves along with continuing to enjoy eating food!
